Manage Your Report Visibility
Decide how your reports can be shared across True Impact’s Reporting Network
Overview
True Impact allows nonprofits to choose whether to share impact reports across a broad ecosystem of trusted platforms—what we call the Impact Reporting Network. This feature is designed to help the reporting work you’ve already completed go further, while ensuring you remain fully in control of what is shared, where it appears, and when.
We believe impact data should do more than live in a single report created for a single relationship. When shared intentionally, impact reports can create ongoing value over time—supporting nonprofits, informing donors, and strengthening communities—without adding new reporting burdens.
Sharing reports publicly is always optional. You decide which reports, if any, are made public, and you can update those decisions at any time.
How to update visibility for existing reports
There are three routes you can take to update your report's visibility status.
Report visibility landing page:
- Upon logging into your True Impact account, click on your name in the top righthand corner to access your Account Management.
- From the tab options at the top of your screen, select "Reports Visibility".
- From the Reports Visibility page, you can either choose to mark all reports as either Public or Restricted, or you can choose "report-by-report" where a full list of your programs and reports will appear. You can select visibility status at the program level (which will set the default setting for all future reports within that program), or at the report level if you'd like to customize your selections for each individual report.
- Your changes will auto-save upon update.
Reports tab:
-
Upon logging into your True Impact account, click into the "Reports" tab.
- In this view, you can see all of your reports by program with a column titled "Visibility." This will allow you to review the visibility status of each report individually. To edit, click "Actions" > "Update report visibility".
- This opens the Reports Visibility page, where you can follow the same steps listed above.
While drafting and submitting a report:
- In the report builder, you can edit the report visibility of that specific report by clicking the pencil icon for "Report visibility" at the top of your screen.
- If the report is set to Restricted, a final pop-up will appear upon submission to confirm your selection.
You can update report visibility at any time from your Report Visibility page. Changes apply going forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Review the FAQs below, and let us know if you have any questions not answered here by reaching us at datasharing@trueimpact.com:
Participation & Management
Is it my choice to participate in the Impact Reporting Network?
Yes. It is entirely your decision whether to make any report public. You can choose to share all reports, some reports, or none at all, and you can update your decision at any time.
How will sharing our reports publicly benefit our organization?
By sharing a report publicly, you increase the visibility of your organization’s impact. Donors may discover your work when searching for organizations to support, and you may be able to reuse your public report to respond to future reporting requests.
Public reports are intended to serve as a “universal” impact report that reflects your program’s outcomes, regardless of who funded it.
If we choose not to share any reports, what does that mean for us?
If you keep reports restricted, they remain visible only to users that you’ve added to your True Impact account and to specific donors you choose to share them with.
You may also choose to share a report with a specific donor by allocating their donation to that report. Restricted reports are not discoverable by other donors or platforms through the Impact Reporting Network.
Please note that your report data will still contribute to social sector benchmarking in an aggregated and anonymous way, but your organization’s identifying information will not be public.
Can I change the visibility of my reports later?
Yes. You can update report visibility at any time in your True Impact account by going to your Report Dashboard and selecting Report Visibility for each report.
When does a change to report visibility take effect?
Changes take effect immediately within True Impact. Updates may take additional time to propagate to partner platforms, depending on their refresh schedules.
Can I choose to share some reports with the Reporting Network and not others?
Yes. Visibility is selected on a report-by-report basis. You can update visibility at any time from your Report Dashboard.
Can I share a portion of my report rather than the report in full?
No. Public reports are shared in full to ensure your impact data is viewed in the proper context.
Can I share reports I previously created on True Impact?
Yes. You may choose to make any existing report public.
Can I allow multiple team members to make decisions about sharing reports with the Impact Reporting Network?
Yes. Any authorized True Impact user in your organization’s account will then be able to select the visibility level for specific reports.
I need a different team member to approve this request and they do not have an account. How can they respond?
Please add your team member(s) to your organization’s True Impact account. Once added, they will be able to review reports and manage visibility settings.
Can I create a new report specifically for public sharing?
At this time, only reports requested by a True Impact-subscribing donor can be made public in the True Impact platform. Alternatively, if you have a Charity Navigator account, you can create a brand new report for rating by logging into your Charity Navigator Nonprofit Portal and visiting the Impact and Measurement Beacon.
In the coming weeks, True Impact will open up our platform for you to create new public reports, so stay tuned for that announcement.
Visibility & Discovery
Who will see my reports if I make them public?
If you choose to make a report public, it may be visible to donors and funders who use platforms that participate in the Impact Reporting Network. This currently includes:
YourCause from Blackbaud, a leading corporate philanthropy and employee engagement platform used by companies and foundations to identify, support, and learn from nonprofit partners. Any report made public will automatically be shared in the coming months.
Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of U.S. nonprofits, which reaches millions of individual donors each year who use the platform to research and support organizations. To share your report, you must go to your Charity Navigator Nonprofit Portal, navigate to the Impact & Measurement Beacon, and complete the Impact section.
Public reports help funders and donors find, discover, and understand your work. Additional trusted platforms may join the Network over time.
How will Charity Navigator use the results from my report?
For eligible U.S.-based nonprofits, Charity Navigator may use publicly shared impact reports as part of its Impact & Measurement evaluation of your nonprofit.
Charity Navigator owns its rating methodology and determines how impact information is evaluated and displayed. Sharing a report does not guarantee a particular rating, but it can help ensure your organization’s impact is represented using information you’ve already provided. If you have questions about the rating process, please reach out to Charity Navigator at info@charitynavigator.org.
Why might we choose not to share a report publicly?
Restricted reports are often appropriate when a report is highly tailored to a single funder’s requirements, includes funder-specific framing, or contains sensitive context that would not be meaningful for a broader audience.
Reports that describe overall program outcomes and impact are generally well suited for public sharing.
Can partner platforms change how my report is displayed or interpreted?
Partner platforms control how publicly shared reports are displayed within their own platform environments, including summaries or evaluations. True Impact does not control partner presentation or scoring methodologies.
If I update a public report, will those changes be reflected on partner platforms?
Yes. Timing and visibility of updates may experience a delay subject to partner refresh schedules. If you have additional questions about your data on the network partner sites, please contact the partner organization.
If new platforms join the Impact Reporting Network, will they see my reports?
Participating platforms immediately gain access to all reports marked Public by participating nonprofits. Restricted reports are not shared with partner platforms.
Donor Reporting & Data Privacy
Can the donor who requested my report see the report even if I restrict its visibility?
Yes. In True Impact, the process of allocating a donor’s investment to one or more reports allows that donor to view it, regardless of whether the report is public or restricted.
Does my donor know which reports I’ve made public?
Donors are not notified when you change report visibility. They may encounter your public report through a participating platform. A donor will always be able to see a report if their investment has been allocated to it.
Do I need permission from a donor to share a report publicly?
No. The decision to share a report publicly belongs to your organization.
What information is included when a report is shared publicly?
Public reports include your program description, beneficiaries, outcomes, measurement approach, location, and total costs.
Donor-specific funding details and custom donor questions are not shared publicly.
This report is Donor-specific, can I make a different version for public sharing?
At this time, only donor-requested reports will be reviewed and published in True Impact. To create a new version for rating on Charity Navigator, please visit your Charity Navigator Nonprofit Portal and find impact reporting in the Impact and Measurement beacon. In the coming weeks, True Impact will open up our platform for you to create new public reports, so stay tuned for that announcement.
I had originally marked a report public, but changed it to restricted later on, what happens with my report and data?
When you change a report from Public to Restricted, it will no longer be accessible by partners in the Impact Reporting Network.
Note, however, that data that was previously shared while the report was public may have been downloaded or printed by users. Also, if you opted into a separate partner-driven process based on your Public True Impact report (e.g., Charity Navigator’s rating regime), that report and its data may remain accessible according to the separate terms of use that you agreed to.
If you believe a report was shared in error or contains sensitive information that should be removed, you may request a review through our formal appeal process by contacting datasharing@trueimpact.com. Requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and any partner takedown efforts are made on a best‑effort basis.
