How do I launch an investment?
There are two ways to launch an investment in your account: uploading it individually, or uploading multiple investments at once using a spreadsheet template. This article walks you through both methods, plus how to invite your grantees to begin reporting.
1. Confirm timelines and launch date with your social impact manager
Before uploading any investments, please reach out to your social impact manager to confirm timelines and review processes.
2. Create a portfolio
- If the portfolio name and year you want to use already exists, you can skip this step and upload your investment.
- Add New, then select Portfolio. =
- Enter a name and description for the portfolio. If you want to restrict it to a particular impact model, select one; otherwise, leave this blank.
- Enter the year that corresponds to this portfolio, then click Save.
- After you have entered the year, select the feedback type from the dropdown menu.
-
- TI only: The report will be only reviewed by True Impact
- Full (TI+Donor): The report will be reviewed by both True Impact and the funder.
- Donor only: Report will be only reviewed by the donor.
- No Feedback: the report will not be reviewed.
- A draft report will be submitted by a grantee and only go to the funder to review
- Feedback from the funder will be sent to the grantee to review and resolve
- Once submitted for verification, it will then go back to the funder to do an additional review and verify the report
- Click save.
3. Upload an individual investment:
Choose this if you only have one or two investments to upload.
- Click Add New, then select Donation.
- Select the portfolio from the dropdown menu.
- Select the manager who should receive notifications related to this investment from the dropdown menu. If the person you want isn't listed, add them to your account first, they'll then appear in the list of options.
- Enter the cash amount, along with any goods/services and volunteerism amounts. Enter 0 for any of these that don't apply.
- Set the reporting dates for this investment by clicking Update next to each one:
- Allocate Investment: the date by which the grantee should allocate this investment to a report. This is often the due date for the initial draft.
- Submit for Feedback: the date by which the report must be submitted for initial feedback. This is often the same date as Allocate Investment.
- Resolve Feedback: the date by which the grantee should update the report based on feedback from you and/or True Impact. This is often the same date as Publish Report.
- Publish Report: the deadline for the report to be published.
- Interim report update and Finalized Report dates are optional and don't need to be set — grantees automatically receive a reminder a month after their program ends to submit their final updates.
- Click Save to save the donation details.
- In the invitation to report (Allocated) tab, enter the program name, organization name, and the grantee's first name, last name, and email . Save this information, then click Send or Manage Invitations. Edit the invitation template as needed, then click Send.
4. Upload multiple investments with a spreadsheet:
Choose this if you have three or more investments to upload.
- Click Add New, then select Donation
- Under Details, click Upload File
- Download the spreadsheet template, then fill it in with each investment's organization, program, cash amount, dates, and other investment details.
- Upload the completed file. Do not use any commas, periods, semicolons, colons in the text of the spreadsheet.
- Review the preview screen. Any rows with errors will be highlighted in red. Fix these in the template and re-upload if needed.
- Once the file is error-free, submit to upload the donations. This adds the investments to your portfolio but does not invite the grantees yet.
5. Invite grantees to reporting
- Go to the Donations tab and open the portfolio containing the new investments. Sort or filter by Status to find investments marked "Unnotified." Select the checkbox next to each investment you want to invite, then click Invite.
- In the invitation template, you can personalize the message using Add Variable to insert fields such as first name, account name, recipient organization, program name, and investment amount. Each grantee will then receive a customized email based on their own investment details.
- Click Send. Grantees will receive their invitation and can begin reporting.
